I think people underestimate how good Romero was at creating characters, especially male characters and depicting their social dynamics. A lot of male behaviour is about trying to keep the barbaric and irresponsible elements under control or simply giving in to and relishing in it. Leadership comes with high pressure, and even caring leaders have to resort to blunt thuggish force to keep other strong personalities in line which brings its own risks. Good men often want to be led but not ruled and appreciate the men who lead well. Rule, even when just, thus becomes a huge risk. Hurt pride can be fixed with basic friendly gestures. Romero's male characters often clash then make up as friends without drawing great focus from the main plot, which makes the behaviour very relatable and realistic. Sometimes "sorry for being a dick" really is all there is to it.

THUMBS DOWN! A most horrible movie! Not watchable. Not redeemable. One of the worse movies I ever watched. To wit: - Acting was sub-sub-sub-par. - Characters were cliches, predictable with no depth. - The portray of the military was laughable. They got nothing right. To wit: - The military does not wear white hazmat suits. They are olive drab. Even in 1973. - No web suspenders. - The MPs wore blue jeans. Whatever, they weren't olive drab. - Couldn't they get a single soldier to get a regulation haircut? - Exposed skin while wearing a hazmat suit? Kinda defeats the purpose of wearing the suit. Sleeves and pant legs should've been taped to the gloves and boots. - Hazmat suits in the office without a gas mask? Wrong! You dispose of the suit after you are decontaminated. - No decontamination stations. Considering the importance of the military in the movie, I was appalled by the complete lack of attention to detail. They should've listened to their military consultant or at least used one. Probably a lot more errors. Typical '70s anti-military mind set. I watched only about 30 minutes. It was just so bad, I couldn't watch any more. If there should be any movie lost to history, this monstrosity is a top contender. One of the worse films ever made. If I was part of the production, I would've insisted my name did not appear in the credits. The only thing "great" about this movie, is how "greatly" awful it is. Thanks for nothing and wasting my time.

Damnation...that was one wild movie. The ambiguous ending makes it seem like it was already too late to stop the spread.
